iPhones are more valued than Androids, even after resale!
If we are to believe what Priceonomics have to say, then, our phone loses its value pretty quickly, lest we have an iPhone.
According to their research, iPhones have the best resale value, while Android devices’ resale value is almost similar to BlackBerrys and is reasonably low. This means that second-hand iPhones are valued more than their equi-priced siblings from Android or BlackBerry stable after a while of their initial purchase.
An 18 month old iPhone still holds 53% of its original value versus a droid which holds 42% and Blackberry, 41%. A slightly more precise analysis reveals, if you buy an iPhone, you can sell it for $13.20 less for each month you own it. BlackBerrys and Androids on the other hand loose close to 40%.
According to the website, cell phones don’t depreciate linearly over time. Most of their value is lost right after you have made a brand new purchase and the rest depreciates gradually. But at any point of time, iPhone retains more of its original value than Android and BlackBerry phones. Even four years later, you can sell a first generation iPhone for close to $110 dollars.
The site also enlists a few money saving tips and for minimizing your total expense when buying a phone and selling it after a while.

Within minutes of my “What the Belle” post being published, I received additional information about the process of firmware update on carrier locked phones from one VERY knowledgeable insider, Dustin Randall (aka DocMobile) From what I learned we are most likely looking at here is a carrier who does not want to take the time and effort to test Nokia Belle on the Astound for what could be a variety of reasons.
- Symbian is a “dead platform”
- Not that many Astounds sold
- Money it costs to test new builds is not worth the investment
- Customer Service (It’s a big update with lots of potential issues)
This would not be the first time a carrier did not want to test a new firmware update for Nokia. They have had similar problems with AT&T in the past not wanting to test the firmware update. This might also be the issue with Android fragmentation that they just can’t get all the carriers to test their new firmware on all the different phones. No matter what the excuse is, it looks like T-Mobile customers will have find “other” methods to get the Belle update on their phones if they really want it.

This past December marked 2 years since Rovio published Angry Birds for the first time for the iPhone. Today, millions of users have downloaded the app and we see updated levels come out all the time.
To celebrate, a special birthday edition of the popular game was released for iOS back in December. Well now it’s time for Android users to get a piece of the cake. Just like the iOS version, it includes 15 new courses which are all unlocked, new graphics and menu designs. It also includes the orange bird from Seasons. Get it from the Android Market now.

If you went out and got a Nokia Astound last year from T-Mobile prepare to be confused.
First a little back ground for those of you who are confused on what the Nokia Astound is. The Nokia Astound is T-Mobile’s version of the Nokia C7, there are few minor changes to the C7 to make the Astound but it’s pretty much the same phone. So one would assume when the Nokia Belle roll out came along the Astound would get the update. (Since the C7 is getting the Belle update)
But it was not to be, Astound user were confused on why their phone was not getting the Belle update and than Nokia Tweeted their answer.
So now instead of being confused on why the Belle update was not showing up on their phone they can now be confused on why their phone can’t get the Belle update. I am guessing here that this is T-Mobile’s and Nokia’s way of pushing C7 users to Windows Phone powered Lumia 710. Events like these is why I really don’t like branded phones and buy unlocked whenever possible.

Well that didn’t take long. Literally hours after releasing and rolling out Nokia Belle, it has already been hacked. Details can be found in our very own forums.
The process is very similar to the procedure used to hack Symbian Anna, so those of you who have already done this shouldn’t have too much trouble with the new variant. If you have never hacked, it would be easy if you follow our tutorial. As with all hacks, please do so at your own risk and we take no responsibility for any damage cause to your devices. The Social Evolution of the To-Do Program
Wunderkit
With the Facebook IPO potentially valuing it at $100 Billion, it’s evident that social networks are now inextricably linked to our daily lives.
What’ll be interesting in the years to come is how these networks evolve. After all, with so much money involved, the pressure is now on Facebook and other social networks to evolve their services and generate new revenue streams.
One area where social networks might be headed is in the area of collaboration. A couple of iOS applications, Wunderkit and Orchestra, let you set-up tasks and projects and assign or request for help in certain areas from your contracts or social networks.
Orhcestra
For example, your wife might be planning a dinner with friends. Using either app, she can set-up tasks within these applications and assign things like buying wine or calling some of the invitees to you. You can also plan projects with friends, say a reunion, with the friends organizing it assigned to RSVP specific invitees.
This slight, yet elegant change to the traditional “to-do” application is significant because it not only leverages the power of the cloud, it also adds a layer of utility to social networks beyond the simple sharing of pictures or likes and/or dislikes.

The 14th February is, if you do not know it, Valentine’s Day and it is just around the corner. But our Finnish neighbours treat Valentine’s Day a little bit different. It is about friendship. Valentine’s Day in Finland is referred to as “Ystavanpaiva”, which means ‘Friend’s Day’.
This year, let us celebrate Ystavanpaiva together by remembering our friends, family member or a fellow Nokia community member that you really appreciate. Here is my story below:
I am regularly in touch with my immediately family, mainly my brother and my sister. My sister and I have an unspoken bond that every 4-6 weeks we need and must see one another. My sister is the baby of the family and I am the eldest but we each take responsibility for the other. My brother and I keep in touch regularly, but I see him less frequently – with his nine children, there is little time for idle chit-chat with one’s sister. The rest of my family I see less frequently, generally around my break time from university so it appears to be every quarter.
However, a one day hospital operation last year, went very wrong with my waking up connecting to all sorts of contraptions and involving an extended stay in hospital on what should have been a three hour appointment. When I came home, my family rallied around. I cannot think of anyone who was not there for me. I was visited everyday, dinner was cooked, I was truly taken care of. Make no mistake, when you find yourself in the position I was in, it made all the difference. My mother is overseas but the family more than made up for her absence. I was left wanting for nothing. Therefore, I cannot choose one special person as my Finnish Valentine, my choice is a group of people and they are called my family. Ystavanpaiva! Happy Friend’s Day.
Who would you choose as your Finnish Valentine for Ystavanpaiva? Between now and the 14th write a post on your blog or via the methods below, about one of the best, most inspirational or caring friends in your life.
You can share your stories with Nokia connects via Twitter with #NokiaValentine or by leaving a comment below or via email.
We look forward to your stories.

First, they confirmed that they wouldn’t be showcasing the SIII at this year’s MWC in Barcelona. Now the electronics giant has pulled out of the press conference all together.
This move is leaving many wondering what sort of presence Samsung will have at one of the biggest mobile conferences of the year. They would still be on the show floor, but with no official press conference, their presence will be somewhat diminished. No major announcements are expected except for a possible new tablet based on Samsung’s 2GHz dual-core Exynos 5250 processor. There’s a chance that the mid-cycle upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy SII Plus might be shown as well. It seems that they have decided to hold their own private event to officially reveal the SIII, similar to what their biggest competitor, Apple currently does.

Symbian/MeeGo App Review Combo Pack: Bedside and Sleepmaker
There are times in life when you just need some sleep it doesn’t matter where you are, but sometimes the place is not conducive to sleep enter what I like to call the “sleep combo pack”.
The first app is called Bedside it is free and can be used on either your Symbian or Meego powered phone. Simply put it transforms your phone into a digital clock, you can choose from various colors for the display and there is even a dimmer.
The second app is called Sleep Maker it cost $0.99 cents and it also can be used on either your Symbian or Meego powered phone. This app is simply a sound machine, it has a nice array of sound choices and timer. If you are running this app on a phone with less than 1ghz processor it is a little laggy but once it’s up and running it works just fine.
Here is a “combo pack” hands on that covers both of these apps.
You can download Bedside here and Sleep Maker here.

The Last Symbian Standing – The Nokia 803 with 4-inch AMOLED, Belle and huge camera sensor
Pictured here is an artists conception of what the final Symbian smartphone might look like based on an outline drawing of the same phone. Dubbed the Nokia 803, the last phone of it’s kind will sport some impressive features.
As already mentioned, the 803 will run Symbian Belle and utilize a 4 inch AMOLED display. Other freatures include an HDMI out (mini) port, microSIM support and NFC. Although details are still unclear, it’s rumoured to incorporate the largest camera sensor ever available on a mobile phone. The Nokia 803 is due to be released sometime in May.

Here comes a mobile that breaks the mold of standard 16:9 screen format and sports a IPS display with 4:3 aspect ratio.
LG today released a teaser of their upcoming mobile Optimus Vu in Korea. The teaser follows somewhat the same strategy of “hide-some-reveal-some” details as was done by HP when they released the teaser of Spectre.
The phone is believed to pack a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm WPQ8060 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal memory. The massive 5-inch display has a 1024×768 resolution, and since it houses a 4:3 aspect ratio the display on the Optimus Vu will actually have a higher surface area than other mobiles in the same screen display category (Remember Samsung Note!). The primary camera is an estimated 8MP.
As of now, there is still no confirmation whether the device will be released internationally or only in Korea.
Will keep you posted!

Finnish Mobile giant, Nokia, has been under heavy criticism and pressure in the last couple of years for its lack of adaptation to new innovations, and its questionable business decisions. One of the biggest concerns regarding the Brand is the uncertain future of its quite-achieved Symbian platform.
Symbian has earned Nokia a reputable top position in the mobile device market since 1996, but in recent years, with the rapid growth of application-friendly devices like the iPhone and lightning-fast OS like Android, Symbian has suffered a notable plummet in market and appeal in almost all corners of the world.
A considerable number of Symbian users have switched to other mobile brands, and unexciting costly new releases have but added to the brand’s demise. But an often-ignored question remains, which is, what are the numbers saying? Is Symbian’s seemingly doomed fate a representation of Nokia’s overall future, or has the brand been able to make some unusual adjustments to maintain its mobile market crown?
We’ve all seen and questioned Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft, its premature drop of the Meego OS, and its sudden push for low end more affordable devices. But could it be that the few steps noted above, along with several others, have kept Nokia as still the world’s incontestable leader in handsets?
According to recent reports from Strategy Analytics, Nokia remains the world’s largest mobile device manufacturer and has a humble but quite significant edge over the competition. In percentage, Nokia holds 26.9% of Global handset market shares while the next closest competitors, Samsung and Apple, only hold 21.1%, and 6% respectively.
This certainly proves that Nokia is far from extinct in this shifting mobile game, and still commands the likes of many faithful customers around the globe. The lesson to learn here is that a throne is as hard, if not harder, to maintain, as it is to gain. Nokia is a perfect example of countering with twice as much effort when in the face of adversity to have the slightest chance in a highly competitive market.
It is undeniable that the Finnish mobile giant still trails behind emerging mobile brands in terms of innovative OS and revolutionary speed, but its top class hardware, and its vast appeal to growing mobile markets in Asia and South America is proving to preserve an edge over the competition.

Okay, the title of the post makes it seem like I am going to give you a factual account of how the Cell phone ACTUALLY made the land line redundant, BUT that was a bit of a lie! I am going to tell you how my cell phone made my landline obsolete.
If you are like me, you graduated high school and went to university. Very exciting stuff, I know because I lived it, but it is a very common existence! Anyways, once you get there, you realize that you need to be able to communicate with people somehow. Lap tops where giant and cumbersome and Skype was just a dream in some kids head and it seemed a little silly to carry around that many quarters (you know, for pay phones?) The most logical choice was a getting a cell phone.
Anyone remember that brick of a cell phone called the Nokia 3310? Well if you were me that was the cell phone that murdered the landline and took my cellular virginity in one fell swoop. Instantly, I was able to call people while on the move, taking it anywhere I pleased and be able to find out where the next party was. No more waiting till I got back to my home to call home for some extra money, now it was done while I should have been reading up for that exam!
Fast forward several years. University is over and now it’s on to a little of this and a little of that. Now you have moved out and you start to get settled in. You order cable (have to watch the big game!), got to have your internet connection and heat, hot water, etc, etc! But one thing that never crosses your mind is calling to connect a new landline. In an effort to save a few dollars, you have chosen or forgotten to order the landline. What is the point of having two services that provide the same function? Well, maybe except that one can be taken with you on the go and the other one is stuck between four walls in a corner. Okay, decisions made easy!
Nokia 3310, you broke the ground on the landlines grave and no one (me) even cared.

Why Apple Prefers iChina
“What it would take to make iPhones in United States?” and “Why can’t that work come home?” were the question President Barack Obama asked Steve Jobs in Feb. 11, 2011 during a during a dinner with Silicon Valley’s top players and Steve Job’s answer was, “Those jobs aren’t coming back.
Call it a harsh reply , the i-reality for the American Mid Level Tech worker is even harsher. Apple employees some 43,000 people in US and 20,000 overseas but generates another 700,000 jobs through suppliers primarily overseas comprising for advanced semi conductors in Germany and Taiwan , Memory from Korea and Japan , Panels and Cirsuits from Korea and Taiwan , chipsets from Europe and rare metals from Africa and China with their major assembly line in Shenzhen China and another in Brazil.
So why Apple loves China so much ?
Having the world’s largest population has it’s advantages , no matter how many and how skilled people you want there is always a supply of them available and Apple is making use of this abundance of human resource in China.
Take FoxConn. the world’s largest manufacturer of consumer electronics and supplier not only to Apple but also to Dell , HP , Motorola , Nintendo and even Nokia , Samsung and Sony producing some 40% of the world’s consumer electronics.
Foxconn employees half a million employees working six days a week for up to 12 hours with a large proportion living living in company housing an earning just $17 a day , to guide the foot traffic , Foxconn has to employee 300 guards to keep things moving orderly.
Beside the massive human resource , Foxconn also employees 10,000 robots , which will increase to 300,000 in 2012 and a million by 2015 ( source- Time Magazine )
Replicate the same magnitude in Unites States and see the costs sky rocket due to housing , medical and other associated setup costs not to mention labor laws and Unions.
When Apple shifted their manufacturing to China , they thought they will require up 8700 industrial engineers to oversee the 200,000 workers, the US the process was estimated to take 9 months , in China it took just 15 days.
With this speed and flexibility China and abundance of resources, China has proved to be an ideal manufacturing base for Apple where costs are low , talent is readily available and people are willing to meet any demands .
To Apple’s advantage , in China everything is manufactured is clusters and is found around the corner , you want any component large or small , chances are you will find the manufacturer within couple of blocks and if you want any changes in design , given the large enough orders of Apple , the changes can be made in least possible time.
So much is the influx of China that another major supplier of Apple , Corning Glass , has shifted their major manufacturing base to Japan and Taiwan.
Now before you start shunning Apple that they have taken US jobs overseas . Although the the manufacturing of iDevices has going abroad , Apple has retained their programming base in US alongwith their $500 million data center in North Carolina, another crucial element being made in US is the processor manufactured by Samsung of South Korea employing 2400 workers in Austin - TX. In the services sector Apple has indirectly created tens and thousands of jobs in retail and courier industry . FedEx and USPS both admit that their have increased their personnel in US due to increase in Apple shipments , meanwhile , as the tech jobs shrink , Apple create more direct and indirect opportunities for people to work at being beneficial for everyone be it in US or abroad.
