Nokia N9 vs. Lumia 800 html5 test
thanks to TMobile germany and Nokia for the Lumia 800, i have the possibility to compare the two recent and most desired devices: Nokia N9 and the new Lumia 800.
there are quite a few good and bad things to tell about each device (the whole comparisson is coming within a few days), but there are some essential points imho which must be great. otherwise the whole user experience could fail and be the base for the final decision to own and love that particular device.
crucial features on a smartphone for me:
- - fast and fluent UI
- - fast browser (100% html5 compatible)
- - open APIs to share data over bt, social webs, cloud
- - good email client
- - good and fast camera
- - possibility to enhance the device with apps
- - long lasting battery & good power management
- - responsive & easy to use sensors: gps, gyrospope, accelerometer, compass, nfc
- - good and high responsive touch display
- - design, built quality
talking about a fast browser, which is crucial for a smartphone experience.
Microsoft is saying that the IE9 is one of the fastest browser for mobile, which is the built in browser in Windows Phone 7. i was not sure about that and ran a quick test with html5test.com,a sunspider javascript test and speedreading.
as you can see the browser on the N9 is making 255 points (+14 bonus), while the IE9 browser on Lumia 800 can score only 141 points. the Sunspider Javascript test shows the following results:
- 6975.2ms (+/- 1.6%) for the Lumia
- 3698.6ms (+/- 4.1%) for the N9
a windows machine with a recent firefox browser hits 299 points (+9 bonus) and needs ca. 487ms for sunspider.
there is a speedreading test, which Microsoft liked to show of the speed on a windows phone and the new mango update. this is a browser test the IE is really good at, because the browser uses hardware acceleration. Lumia 800 was already done with it, while the N9 has made 50%. in that case IE was more then 3x as fast as the webkit browser.

the overall browsing experience is very good and fast on both devices. but N9 wins with better support for HTML5, better multitastking. the IE9 on Lumia 800 wins with hardware acceleration on some sites and the ability to save your favorites and the ability to copy and paste.
you can run the html5test and sunspider test for yourself with your browser.
what do you expect from a smartphone? are you happy with your device right now or looking for a new one?
Update 1:
Browsermark test results:
- N9: 17638
- Lumia 800: 31242
- PC for comparisson: 245808
