Nokia N8 Tour across Germany - first stop Düsseldorf

Nokia N8 is highly anticipated to be in shops as soon as possible. i could finally get my hands on "nearly ready" devices at the Nokia N8 tour, which is just started. first stop was in Düsseldorf today.

thanks to Nokia we could get our hands on the N8 and get some answers to our questions. all the other people could follow the #N8tour #hashtag, too (wich i highly recommend for the other days).  i was very excited to see the N8 in action and meet the product manager Kay and Robert from @Nokia_Presse in person. obviously i was not alone: @chippy from carrypad.com has joined us at the tour-van spontaneously... (thanks for coming, steve )

i hope, that this van will last till Munich where the tour is going to after Hannover, Hamburg, Mannheim and other cities all across Germany till next wednesday...

but now to the subject :-)

as you can see we miss the orange one, Norman is occupied with it... :-)

First, the impressive part:

what we saw first was a HD 720p teaser of "clash of the titans" with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound via HDMI on a 40" flat screen TV. the N8 can really playback a 720p material up to 30fps. you can play the sound via HDMI or the 3.5mm audio-out. it's quite impressive what you can squeeze out of that little device :-) while the sound is gigantic on HDMI, the poorness shows without it. there is only a mono speaker for playback your music or listen to a soundbite in hands-free mode.

the OS is very fast, although it's not ready yet. but, no worry: when it's arriving at the shops, there might be some improvements waiting for you.

2nd, the unbelievable part:

what i could hardly believe is the USB on-the-Go feature and the video editing right on your N8. the USB on-the-Go supports not only some USB sticks, but it sports 2.5" HDDs aswell.

yes, it give up to 500mAh on its MicroUSB port, so that you can connect a bunch of USB devices (via a USB HUB ), which are immediately shown in the filemanager. the main question is: how many GBs can the N8 handle anyway?

imagine to connect a bluetooth mouse and keyboard to the N8, connect it via HDMI to the TV and you can browse the web and read email or play games right on your TV via the N8! it's possible!

@chippy copied some pics from the N8 to N82 via USB without a pain.

3rd, the disappointing part:

the main disappointing part is: the Nokia N8 is not released yet :-) the browser is hardly improved and need a completely overhaul imho. you can browse as fast as your connection might be with a native flash support within the browser, but this is also a point that can slow the browser down. you might need a youtube app, when you want to see more than one flash video on the N8. another part might be the battery. 1200mAh could be a bit too small for the whole smartphone, but this is a point, which can be verified in the long run. the OS: Symbian^3 could be a problem, too. there might be not enough improvements, which are done to the OS. but, it's too early to say, because, we couldn't trial it through its paces. i think the N8 must jump through a few hoops to get all things right.

4th and last, the great part:

What is really great on that device is the real multitask power: Kai tested it with up to 21 apps with no lags at all. the best part of the N8 is, i think the quality of the built. the N8 reminds some people of the Nokia Booklet 3G, which is built out of a aluminium block, too. the video editing feature is great. you can edit, cut , paste your videos, pictures, text and sound files all together and merge it in a very impressive presentation. i think this feature (or the N8 itself) is a must for every blogger or online journalist. the 12 megapixel cam with the Xenon light is so damn good, that you can leave your pocket cam at home. the video recording with uo to 720p is good, but in the recent time with iPhone4 and Samsung Galaxy S only average due to the lack of a light during the video recording session imho. the very own social web client, which you might know from the OVI Beta appls list is really good and it will be improved and developed in the future. (no competition for @janole (Gravity) so far :-) ) all services could be updated separately with the new update feature. i wish the apps in OVI Store (which is looking great on the N8) would have this feature, too. (like in Android Market or itunes Store).

i can't wait to get my hands on it for more then a few hours to get a real view on it and create some awsome presentations and video mashups on the N8 itself. i like that the N8 can handle up to 10 email accounts and merge my contacts with the facebook, twitter and other social web services in the contact list.

this are the first impressions on the Nokia N8, which will be in stores at the end of September. more videos and pics are following soon here or on carrypad.com

what do you think about the N8? please comment. do it! :-)
