N900 - Howto remove shadows from desktop icons

If you tried a nice theme on N900 and dislike the shadows under the desktop icons,

you probably will like that little tweak:

You can remove the shadows from the icons by changing the name of the following files on N900.

1. access X-Terminal

2. type in following:

$ sudo gainroot

$ cd /usr/share/themes/
Actual_Theme/images/

$ mv ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png

 ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png.old

$ mv ApplicationShortcutApplet.png

 ApplicationShortcutApplet.png.old

3. reboot your device

You can easily restore the your settings by renaming the files back

to the extension .png.

to restore

1. type in following:

$ sudo gainroot

$ cd /usr/share/themes/Actual_Theme/images/

$ mv ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png.old

   ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png

$ mv ApplicationShortcutApplet.png.old

   ApplicationShortcutApplet.png

2. reboot your device

Rename

i dont understand what i should write instead of the Actual_theme… cuz when i type in my theme( digital_nature) and it doesnt work.. then when i try using alpha or beta instead it goes farther but after that it says : can not rename ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png… i dont understand xD Help please :D

RE: Rename

Hi Flander5,

i don't know what went wrong on your side, but here is the example for digital nature (all file names are case sensitive).

all steps without the brackets "":

  • 1. "sudo gainroot"
  • 2. "cd /usr/share/themes/digital_nature/images/"
  • 3. "mv ApplicationShortcutApplet.png ApplicationShortcutApplet.png.old"
  • 4. "mv ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png ApplicationShortcutAppletPressed.png.old"
  •

this should look like this (alpha theme):

doesnt work

i followed your steps but it still wouldnt work.. but its okay i guess.. but i noticed that your screen captures showed that you didnt type in the same as what you wrote over,in the instructions... but its fine for me.. would be cool to do it but,its not life or death xD thanks for your time ;)

RE: doesnt work

you're right :-)

i've corrected the description already...

after renaming the files, you have to reboot the device.
